Dog Training
Training your puppy is crucial for your dog and your relationship. The earlier you start the better, as it helps prevent behavioral issues (biting, nipping, barking, etc) from developing, but it’s never too late. It’s not only fun, it builds a stronger bond between you and your dog. It’s also good for your dog’s health!
Keys To Success
Always keep the following points in mind
- Consistency– It is crucial that you are completely consistent as you reinforce your dogs behaviors. The more consistent you are, the faster your dog will learn, and inconsistency will confuse your dog and delay progress
- Environment– Train your dog in an environment appropriate for the behavior or trick and his/her skill level. For most things starting out, you will want a distraction-free environment so your dog can better focus, while later you may want to add distractions to develop your dogs training even more. If you are training your dog for a skill that is independent of the environment, you will want to train in a variety of environments as the skill is acquired to avoid the skill becoming environment dependent
- Mood– Pay attention to your dogs mood, and yours! Your dog will likely read you better than your human friends can and respond to it, so it’s important that you are sincerely excited and happy to train. Make sure you are training him at a time when you are both in a good place. If your dog is scared or stressed you may want to change the environment or take the time to comfort him instead. The best time is when your dog will be hungry soon (but not hungry), rested and excited.
- Patience– Every dog is different. Many factors will affect how well and quickly your dog learns. Like we said, your dog is amazing at reading your mood and body language. So if you find yourself getting frustrated, it’s better to stop for the day than for your dog to associate that with training. If you really hit a wall, it could be time to consult a trainer, enroll in a class with your dog, or address underlying issues that may be preventing success
